Biarritz, Gethary, and San Juan de Luz are charming coastal cities and villages in the South-West of France, in just 45 kilometers distance from San Sebastián. I would be delighted to organize your tour of Biarritz and San Juan de Luz, taking you to the most famous places and sharing their history and anecdotes.
Biarritz, renowned for its elegance, beautiful beaches and rich history.
Let’s begin our tour at the wonderful Hotel du Palais and the famous Grande Plage in the heart of Biarritz. This fine sandy beach stretches along the coast and has been a fashionable destination since the mid 19th century. Before becoming a popular resort, Biarritz was a small fishing village.
In 1854, Napoleon III’s wife Empress Eugenia visited Biarritz and contributed to its popularity, attracting the European high society.
We will pay a visit to The Rocher de la Vierge, a rock with a statue of the Virgin Mary erected in 1865, that can be accessed by an iron bridge. I will narrate its tale on-site. Or the Biarritz Lighthouse, from where we will enjoy breath-taking panoramic views of the city on the one side and the ocean on the other side.
We will explore the Biarritz Market, where small bars and terraces are attracting a large number of people, creating a welcoming festive atmosphere.
We will then head to Saint-Jean-de-Luz, a picturesque town near Biarritz, a charming example of the typical French Basque atmosphere.
Its beautiful golden sandy beach, charming fishing port or the Church of Saint John the Baptist, where the famous royal wedding between King Louis XIV and Maria Theresa of Austria took place. But I will tell you all the details about this incredible wedding once we’ll be on site.
We will explore the Maison de l’Infante, the house where Maria Theresa of Austria stayed until before the wedding.
We will stroll through Rue Gambetta, a lively pedestrian street full of shops, restaurants and cafes. Enjoy the traditional Basque architecture and immerse yourself into the local life.
San Juan de Luz has been a haven for artists and writers over the years, attracting creative individuals seeking inspiration from its charming surroundings.
Enjoy exploring these French Basque cities and towns!
