San Sebastian’s La Zurriola Beach, also known as Gros Beach, is renowned for its fantastic surf conditions. Situated in the heart of the city, it’s a favorite spot for both locals and visitors seeking to catch some waves.
La Zurriola benefits from a consistent swell, making it a reliable destination for surfers throughout the year. The Atlantic Ocean’s energy delivers waves suitable for all skill levels, from beginners to experienced surfers.
For those new to surfing or looking to improve their skills, there are several surf schools and rental shops. These establishments offer lessons and equipment rental, providing everything needed for an enjoyable surfing experience.
Due to its popularity, especially during peak seasons, La Zurriola Beach can get crowded. However, the long stretch of coastline helps distribute surfers, minimizing congestion in the water.
The sea temperature begins to rise in May, although it may still be on the cooler side for swimming, particularly early in the month. Nevertheless, some brave souls may venture into the water, especially during sunny days.
Beyond the surfing, La Zurriola Beach boasts stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the iconic Monte Urgull and Monte Igueldo. After a session in the water, surfers can relax on the beach or explore the charming streets of San Sebastian.

The Basque Surf Federation (Euskal Herriko Surf Federazioa) published this month the list of competitions that will take place this year.
Like last year, the surf category will have four competitions.
The first one will take place at ZURRIOLA BEACH in San Sebastian on the weekend of April 27th and 28th.
And the following ones will take place on beaches in Vizcaya such as Sopelana, La Arena and finally in Mundaka, throughout the year 2024.
